22 June 2011 Gooney Bird
Technically this was a military transport C47 in its working life and not a DC-3, but it has been a long time since I've seen one. This poor beauty has fallen on hard times, but still stands as a graceful monument to a day when airflight was fairly new and amazing. She appeared airworthy as late as 1994 and still appears mostly intact. She has an interesting history past her military service. Apparently she served time as the jump plane for a skydiving crew that performed at Kings Island. She was sitting at an airport in Western Ohio when her owner was killed in another plane crash.

18 June 2011 Long Time Since '03
We were out caching in Lake Metroparks this evening. One of our stops was the Girdled Road Park. Its been almost eight years since we took our first goofy picture at a park bench along the trail. The bench is still there at the same spot. We're a little older, but still take goofy pictures.

4 June 2011 A Day in Ashtabula
We were invited to a walk at a Grand River lowlands property owned and managed by the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. The land is home to a population of rattlesnakes and a medium-sized heron rookery. We were in luck and treated to a great show of adult herons and their young. We looked for, but didn't spot any of the native rattlesnakes.
I learned today this is a crawdad chimney hole. The trail was dotted with these today, but no crawdads were spotted.
At the end of our walk we were treated to a nice view of an osprey hunting in the nearby trees.
This old steel bridge is just down the road from the WRLC holding.
After the WRLC walk, we drove to a nearby parking area for the Ashtabula Greenway Trail and spent a large portion of the day walking the rail trail and caching. There were a few interesting sights along the way including this yellow spider quietly taking advantage of the camo provided by a daisy to wait for insects who happened along.

30 May 2011 Tanbark Trail and Baker's Rocks
We started our day hoping to be able to spot some late painted trilliums in bloom. Okay, I was hoping to see a few while Ali was humoring me. We were too late for the painted trilliums, but got to enjoy a hike on a favorite section of the Tanbark Trail. Recent rain left the streams full and the waterfalls scenic so it was worth a climb down.
We were happy to spot orchids on the trail to Baker's Rocks. It is a very tough climb so the orchids were a nice payback even if these weren't in bloom yet.
The walk passes a large stand of chestnuts still fighting to survive. The rocks are a super formation and great fun to pass through. There are some nice chambers in the rock formations including a very large one with multiple rooms and a geocache. We were near Baker's to drop a few new hides which we did and moved on.
The Pittsfield Bridge will be history within a few days. PA seems intent to replace these old beauties with newer bridges. Since this one keeps getting hit with vehicles too tall to pass through, their decision seems wise. Still sad to see an old gem taken down...

29 May 2011 Starting the 1 Tough Cookie Series
After attending the Geomeet at Kinzua Beach and hiking the new Kinzua Beach to RimRock Trail, we drove over to the 1 Tough Cookie series with Andrew of haloedversionls and enjoyed some trail time. The new series was hidden by our friend MountainBikerGal. It was great to be hiking.

We never noticed this caption before this evening. It reads, "Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees."... John Muir
