20 August 2024 Watching a Red-bellied Woodpecker

I stopped at a local park on my way home to drop of recycle. While there I took a short walk and spotted this red-bellied woodpecker checking a dead tree for insects to eat.

8 August 2024 Two Herons

My walk at Sunny Lake gave two great opportunities to see great blue herons. The first was in an area with tree cover. I grabbed a few images and moved on.

While in the sun I spotted a beautiful mirrored image of a great blue with a perfect reflection on the water.

Both were a wonderful sight at a really tough moment. The damage from storms was still a top priority.

6 August 2024 After the Storm

Five torandos passed through the area. The destruction was a bit numbing. I was nursing two dying dogs and Ali was back east for a funeral. Still, we were much luckier than so many people. I needed a break from our aging dogs, the damage at the house and the ongoing pressures of my work. The Rookery was close by and mostly spared the damage from the storm.

2 August 2024 Unusual Sightings at Orchard Hills

It was a day for blue birds from different families. A bluebird on top of a the posts sits atop a well used birdbox. In the image below an rare, for me, indigo bunting sits perched with some floofed-out feathers.

I'm believe this was my first and so far only spotting of a crossblill

There were still plenty of goldfinch to brighten my day.

20 July 2024 Wildlife at West Woods

It was a perfect warm summer evening to visit West Woods. There were at least eight ducks in this surprise sighting.

Frogs were plentiful on the water.

We topped the walk a great sighting of this cedar waxwing.

17 July 2024 Summer Marches On

It was a blue sky day with perfect weather for a visit to Sunny Lake for a walk with the camera. A hawk on a utility line and a great blue heron fishing for an early evening meal were on offering.

Purple coneflower brightened the trailside while beebalm offered a bed for a weary bee to rest.
