23 January 2021 Standing Rock

Standing Rock has all sorts of folklore surrounding it.  Most of it is probably just tall tales passed down through the generations.  Still, it is an interesting landmark in the middle of the Cuyahoga River as it passes through Kent, Ohio. Today it was hosting a flotilla of geese.

We also spotting a few mallards on the far side of the river.

22 January 2022 Backyard Birding

16 January 2021 Keyser Park

It was a cold and windy day with snow swirling in the park.  We found most of the caches in the park and had some much needed exercise on a winter day.

The Keyser Barn is over 100 years old.  It was restored for Cuyahoga Falls bicentenntial.  Its a beautiful remnant to the farming past of the town.

14 January 2021 Evening Walk at Gully Brook

As January progressed later sunsets made a few evening walks possible.  We visited Gully Brook to give the dogs and us some exercise.  The woods were wet, but the walk was fun.  We finished our walk as the last light faded.

10 January 2021 Bradley Woods

It seems as though every visit to Bradley Nature Park and Bradley Woods is a wet, muddy adventure.  Today was no different.  The weather closer to the lake was cold and biting today as we made our first stop and Bradley Nature Park.  We walked lightly through the water and avoided a few left behind objects to find all the caches in the park, but one.

A 55 Build Century was an interesting, old cast-off on our walk.  This was an interesting car in its early life with portholes on the front fender and a baby-body.  Today, it is a forlorn hunk of rusted metal in the woods.

Our journey at Cleveland Metropark's Bradley Woods did not get much drier.  Every winter day in the woods gets one day closer to the magic of spring.

9 January 2021 On the Buckeye Trail

It was a very mild day and perfect for a walk on  the Buckeye Trail in Cleveland Metropark's Brecksville Reservation.  This is a familiar walk for us and one of the best stretches of Buckeye Trail.

Ali uses a "tool" to release a high-hanging cache container.

Lizzie seems to be getting less shy about being in an image.

We were a little early for the spring peepers at the wet area.  Maybe a wood duck or two will find this a good stopping point.

Rather than walk back on the Buckeye Trail, we crossed over to an older trail that wound back to a old parking area and followed an old closed road back to near our Subaru.  We had almost reached the old parking area when we spotted a pair of red-headed woodpeckers.  The certainly appeared to be planning on nesting at the top of a snag.  We don't often see these so it was quite a treat.

8 January 2021 Backyard Birding

I expect the pandemic eventually got to everyone.  After decades of travel, my world had become a small home office.  Over the holidays I decided I needed to do something to make it through winter.  We had bird feeders scattered throughout the yard.  I decided to bring them close to the house at a place where we could both enjoy their beauty.  Please enjoy this posts and the others of our backyard guests this winter.

3 January 2021 Rookery Walk

There was a time we were frequent visitors to the Rookery.  Our visits are less frequent, but they are still pleasant.  We didn't spot any birds on our visit, but we took the dogs to the far end of the park.  With our first dogs Murray and Becky these were crazy spirited races to the sign marking the park boundary and back.  This cold afternoon was a little gentler, but very pleasant.

Lizzie is the most camera shy dog we've had.  This afternoon she was okay with a rare image.

2 January 2021 Beartown Reservation Walk

Sunset was stretching out so we were able to make walks a little later.  There was a new geocache at Beartown Reservation.  The ground was mostly snow free.  Our cold loop walk wasn't long, but we were happy to be out.

We're always looking for the first skunk cabbage.  It never means spring is near, but it does give hope.

27 December 2020 North Chagrin

A cold snap of winter weather had chased most of the park's pandemic visitors indoors.  The light crowd of dedicated park visitors seemed like a normal winter day on the trail.

We took a walk under the wooden arch.

Heavy, wet snow has probably doomed this young tree.

26 December 2020 Walking the Rookery

Some winter days the world exists in black and whte.

We were surprised by a kingfisher in a treetop on the water.

20 December 2020 Richfield Heritage Preserve

There are days during the winter where temperature isn't that low, but the humidity will chill to the bone instantly. The chill gets there and stays long beyond the time you leave the trails.  It was that day today in Richfield Heritage Preserve.  The dampness was carried on a fog.

Our only bird sighting for the afternoon was this woodpecker working over trees near our first cache find.

Kirby's Mill was looking like a holiday card.  We were at the turnaround point of our walk.

19 December 2020 Marshallville

Marshallville is a small town that was once a railroad stop.  Today the old railroad grade is a bike/hike trail and the reason for our visiting this quiet, little town on a very cold day.

I didn't expect to be birding on the trail.  It went from small to medium to large with a junco, a rough-legged hawk, and a very surprising eagle.  Both the hawk and eagle appeared to be actively hunting the farm field.  Maybe there were small rodents waiting to become a meal.

It was a bitterly cold afternoon.  In northeast Ohio one either stays indoors and waits for longer, brighter, warmer days or one goes out and makes something of the miserable weather.  Three birds and a few deer spotted while walking together with the dogs moves the world one more day closer to the next spring and gives back a few memories.  Besides, there is always hot chocolate and a blanket waiting at home.

17 December 2020 Short, Cold Days

It's nearly the first official day of winter,  Phineas understands the need for comfort.  😀  He's a special beagle.  💓

13 December 2020 Grey December Day

In Northeast Ohio some Decmeber days just never get brighter.  This was one of those days.  After much recent rain and storms the bridle trail in South Chagrin was wet with downed branches everywhere.

This smooth fungus almost looked like some sort of seafood to me.

Shadow Lake has history for me.  I grew up on Cleveland's west side.  When I began working I moved to this area to be closer to work.  It was a new, different world for me.  Shadow Lake was a place to go and be outdoors.  I don't see this place often anymore since my work has taken me to a different county, but it is a peaceful memory.

Some things don't change.  This trash dump was flaring methane when I lived near here years ago and still continues to flare.

These teepee structures are not uncommon elsewhere in South Chagrin, but I've noticed them elsewhere in Cleveland Metroparks.

Who knows when the grey winter days of Northeast Ohio will end with a return of cold sunshine.  In the meantime, we shortened the winter by day with time on the trail.  That is a win.
