5 September 2018 Cormorants

I was walking the shore at Sunny Lake for lunch. First there was one cormorant swimming by the shore.

Then there was another on an old pole remnant in the lake.

The they had formed a gang on poles near the power lines.

Cormorants are not the most attractive birds on the water. ;)

Luckily there was a great blue along the shoreline too.

There were also a few late season blossoms to see.

3 September 2018 Along the Allegheny

It was a big afternoon for mergansers along the river. We counted eight mergansers floating the far shore.

We also spotted a busy marbled orb weaver spinning a web to the side of the trail.

Summer is winding down and so are the wildflowers. A few great blue lobelia still dotted the trai.

At one end of the trail there were a small number of Great Blue Lobelias with pink spikes. It was the only location on the trail where we spotted them.

2 September 2018 Heffner Reservoir

It was a real hot day, and we had a long hike through rocks planned so Phineas and Lizzie chilled at the house.

A slight climb and a gentle walk along a forest road got us close to our first target, a 2005 cache at Heffner Reservoir.

The trail also gave us our first view of the first orchids of the day.

With no boats, fishing, or swimming this is a very quiet and peaceful place to visit.

We were soon back on the trail and headed toward the rocks.

We soon reached a rock which was our stopping point for the forest road and our turning point toward the rocks.

A carpet of ferns led the way to the next part of our journey.

The rocks were great! We enjoyed our journey through the giants.

1 September 2018 Geauga Fair Part 2

Last year I basically missed our Friday at the county fair with a long business meeting. We came back on Saturday and found the donkey events. This year we came back again to focus in the donkey events. The fair is pretty wide open on what is a donkey, but it was fun.

This is serious competition. ;)

Sometimes you just need to roll.

The thrill of victory!

31 August 2018 Fair Day

Lulu was parked at a local shopping center.

With the car spotting out of the way, we headed off to Lake County for a little walking and a few caches. Our first stop was at a lightly visited park with a trail through the woods and along Ward Brook. We've enjoyed visits here before and were happy to return.

Our last walk was at Chagrin River Park for a couple finds. We enjoyed the caches and a couple wildlife spottings.

We had not seen a deer crossing the Chagrin River before.

It was one really skinny deer.

Made it!

It was time for the Geauga County Fair.

We stopped to watch the dress your poultry competition.

Safety duck was ready for the competition.

It was tough competition as the feathers were flying.

The judge was very serious about his job.

In the end safety duck placed high. After this excitement we moved on to the quiet of the goat barn.

We enjoyed the balloon launch and the evening's horse pull.
