2 February 2020 Myakka State Park

Myakka is a truly special place.  Every turn gives another view to incredible wildlife sightings.  The park is a geocaching mecca.  It was wonderful to take a day and just watch the beauty of the wild.

Meal time

We spotted fewer alligators than usual, but there were enough to satisfy our viewing desires.

We stopped by the souvenir and refreshment area for a Coke.  There is an inlet across the street from parking that always offers interesting bird sightings.  Today's visit delivered with a roseatte spoonbill at the water's edge.  The spoonbill is one of the birds we aren't always able to spot when in Florida.  This one was a treat.  I also spotted pineapple coconut patties at the store.

Our last birding stop was a boardwalk and viewing platform.  This has been a place we could count on to spot a couple eagles.  That wasn't the case this year, but we saw many pelicans.  Like roseate spoonbills, they are birds we can miss seeing for an entire visit.  This year there was a large congregation on a small spit of land.  The other birds were great to see as well.  We weren't so happy to spot wild hogs hanging out at the water's edge.  We had seen a number of active hog traps in the park so we expected activity was up.

It seemed odd seeing a younger pig and a great blue heron very close to each other.  Neither seemed to be bothered by the other.

Geocaching is a fun activity, but the wildlife viewing in Myakka is awesome.  Only our time at CREW compares to the non-stop wildlife viewing opportunities.  It has become something I wait patiently to see each year.
