16 May 2021 Beaver Meadows

We were leaving Winchester hoping for a spring stop at Blandy Farm.  The weather did not cooperate.  We decided to stop at a Winchester park for some walking and geocaching.  It wasn't Blandy, but we enjoyed the park and the creative geocaching containers.

I counted momma mallard out with five duckilings for a park stroll.

On our way to the park we made our usual stop at the Virginia Farmers Market for apples and a cherry pie.

Shenendoah was waiting for us as it always is.  We were staying for the first time at Big Meadows.  Once in the park we began stopping at overlooks and enjoyed a few short walks as we made our way to our home for the week.

After checking in we decided to take a walk from the lodge area to Beaver Meadows.  We were hoping for a few bird and wildflower sightings.  Blue skies had moved into the area.

There were birds everywhere.  It was not my best photography day, but they were great to see.  American redstart sightings are infrequent for us.  This one kept moving through the trees about 30 feet off the path.

Bluebirds were everywhere.

This was my first spring visit to Shenendoah.  I had not been to Beaver Meadows before when the fields were just starting growth.

We were hoping for a visit to Old Rag on this journey.  It loomed over the meadow.

Normally on visits the vegetation blocks any view of the multiple survey posts within the meadow.

We over a mile from feet up and sunset from our balcony.

15 May 2021 Heading South to Virginia

We have stayed in Uniontown multiple times, but never spent much time in the town.  Today we decided to use a local historical puzzle based on the life of General George Marshall.  Driving in Uniontown wasn't a pleasant experience. but it is an interesting town for walking and visiting.

When we started geocaching, there were so many places we visited that were not known to us.  We've cached for so long that those new places are infrequent.  Today, Ali chose a place called Wharton Township Recreational Park.  The park offered good looking ball diamonds, plenty of picnic opportunities and a trail filled with wildflowers.  It was a perfect new place to explore and enjoy.

Our next visit was a longer walk at a new for us gamelands.  SGL265 offered wildflowers, rock structures, and wildlife.  We also enjoyed saying hello to another cacher on the trail in as we returned.

A friend always spots interesting stones amongst the road material in gamelands.  The state often has a small area in the gameland where material is removed and crushed for the roadways.  Today I spotted this one on the way.

It is time for fiddleheads as the ferns start to unwind.

Our day wasn't over as we made a couple of tourist visits to Casselman's Bridge and a historical toll house on the Old Cumberland Road.

It was a busy, happy day to be out exploring.

14 May 2020 South Park

It was time for an eagerly awaited vacation.  Tonight's first stop would be near Uniontown.  By the time we returned the rhododendren blossoms would be past their prime.  The butterflies would need to enjoy them while we were gone.

Pittsburgh has some very nice parks.  We would probably visit more often if not for the horrid traffic patterns around the area.  South Park still had a number of older unfound caches and lured us in for an afternoon of birding geocaching, and wildflowers.

We found this area which looked like an old wading pool at an estate.  It was apparently part of a CCC project.  It looks like it was a grand place to visit.

On to our first stop of the trip.

12 May 2021 Mallard Pair

We stopped for a walk at a nearby park and spotted this pair of mallards on a small wetland.

9 May 2021 Weather Change

We went from walking in a park in Medina County to sleet.  Brrr.

8 May 2021 Allardale Walk

Allardale is always a pleasant visit for us.  We were in time for spring wildflowers as we walked the trails.

The dogs are usually happy to walk in the water.  Lizzie started using the stepping stones, but quickly left the stones for a walk across the cool stream.  Phin joined in quickly.

I was slow with the image as an eagle moved quickly across the path.
