9 October 2010 Caching Crawford and Sherman Bridge
We spent a few hours hunting a group of caches in a gameland in Crawford County. Our first cache took us across this stream. It was a little deep so we started the day with wet feet. Luckily, it was warm.
We didn't find the cache at this bridge, but I did spot this nice PennDOT plaque on the bridge. The plaque was blocked by a guardrail so this was the best shot.
Carman Bridge is the last covered bridge in Erie County PA. The second last one was burned a few years ago by a few jerks with gasoline. It had a lot more character than Carman.

3 October 2010 A New Smokey
The ANF has placed a new Smokey sign at their new headquarters in North Warren. When the facility opened the only Smokey was a flat one attached to the wall of the building.
We grabbed a few caches today including a Boy Scout cache near this soon to be opened launch spot along the east shore of the Conewango. There's not really any public places to launch on the Conewango in PA so this is a nice find. The launch isn't for the faint of heart or skill though. The Conewango is a really unsung gem in the Warren area. Most canoes and kayaks spend their hours on the Allegheny, but there's some nice water riding here.

2 October 2010 Along the NCT
We started a nice, long walk along the NCT at the Allegheny Reservoir. It was a bit grey, but a good time for walking with the geodogs.
The Army Corp has lowered the water level in the reservoir making this fish habitats visible. I never knew these were here.
Hepatica waiting for next spring.
Sugar Bay near dusk
It must have been a long day.
It was a perfect day on the trail. Our day got a little strange when we heard singing in the woods. We soon realized the source of the singing was about two dozen youth. The dogs were a hit when we stopped to say hello. One of the adventurers noticed the gps units and told us they were lost. We soon found out this was a group from Malone College near our home. They had gone for a walk as part of a class outing and made the wrong turn on the trail. Despite the group leader's objections that all was fine, they needed directions. Ali helped get them turned around and on the right path while Gwen and Eva got lots of attention from the students.

29 September 2010 Caddies in Carlisle
These two beauties were parked at my hotel today. The one from the 60's is just like one owned by our neighbor. I grew up in an area where caddies were rare. There were only three I knew of as a youth, the one owned by our neighbor, one owned by my friend's grandfather, and one owned by the owner of a business where my dad worked a second job. As a teen, my friend's grandfather thought I was a good kid so he let me drive his black 58 Eldorado. It had dual exhausts and ran with a low rumble (and went really fast). Seeing these sitting side-by-side brought back memories.
25 September 2010 Oil Creek State Park
The weather at Oil Creek finally said fall with chilly temps and a grey sky. The leaves never really seemed to peak this year, but hiking was still super.
The Oil Creek and Titusville excursion train left the station while I was still in the Stream. It's a popular destination in an area of rich history.
The camping shelters at Oil Creek are some of the best we've seen. They are also located in a very scenic section of woods.
