24 July 2021 Girdled Road

It was a hot day to be on the trail so we packed extra water before heading to Girdled Road with the dogs.  The fields on the way to the woods were busy with butterflies and bees working the wildflowers.

The woods gave some shade from the sun while hunted a few geocaches and stopped to see some interesting fungus.

Phineas was a happy baby on the trail.

23 July 2021 Hummingbird Moth

I don't see hummingbird moths often.  When I do they tend to be tough to capture in images with constant movement.  This summer we have seen multiples in our yard.  Today one had stopped in the perenials to visit the monarda.

The hummingbird moth wasn't the only visitor at the flower garden.

18 July 2021 Butterflies and Bees

It was a day for yard chores.  Once they were completed I made my way to Rogers Road to walk the field.  I was hoping for butterfles and wasn't disappointed.  I was also hoping for cedar waxwings, but they weren't in the woodline this evening.

17 July 2021 Changed Plans

Sometimes things don't work out as planned.  This was supposed to be a longer weekend, but we ended up at home.  I took the unexpected time off to finish some yard work and enjoy the flowers in bloom.

16 July 2021 Phineas

Phineas is getting older, but he still enjoys a good book (and leaving dog fur).

15 July 2021 Dragonflies and a Heron

I was back in my office and taking a phone call by the pond.  Mid-summer brings dragonflies, frogs, and herons.  There were no frogs visible, but dragonflies were plentiful.

There was a heron on the far side of the pond.  It was nearly 90 so the heron was using its beak to control its temperature and gain cooling.

9 July 2021 Buckeye Bush

Our buckeye bush continues to grow and is now attracting more butterflies and the occasional hummingbird moth.

4 July 2021 Visiting Quehenna Wildlife Area

It looks like a Subaru ad....

We seem to make a stop at Quehenna each weekend of the 4th.  The holiday with longer days makes the longer drive easier to manage.  It's also prime time for blueberries and raspberries along the trail.  It was a good way to spend the holiday.

We spotted the leaves of a round-leaved orchid, but there was no spike.

This geocache has been resting in the woods for nearly seventeen years.

We had become used to not seeing this pest in the woods.  This year gypsy moths seem to be rallying.  We kill them whenever we spot them.  They are very destructive to oak trees.

3 July 2021 Buzzard Swamp

A long holiday weekend and longer days gave us different choices for longer outings.  We've made visits to the flat swamp area of Buzzard Swamp before.  The area is filled with wildlife and always offers a different experience.  Today there seemed to be butterflies everywhere.

We rarely see morning cloaks by the start of summer.  Today there were many along the trail.

The small pools alongside the trail were teeming with wildlife.

The watchful eyes of a parent...

This was the end of the line for us on today's walk.  It was hot.  We always have plenty of water for the dogs, but still hold back the distances on really warm days.

Identifying younger sparrows is beyond my birding knowledge.  This one was breaking into song while perched.

This lesser yellow legs wasn't at this pool on our way out.  It was there for the return.

This was a perfect way for us to spend an afternoon.
