17 August 2010 Royalton
It has been a while since I last visited Royalton Park. The last time I was here was to hunt a couple geocaches and see what giant hogweed really looked like. Tonight was a quiet walk for a few caches and to go looking again to see if the giant hogweed was still here. I was happy to see the monster weed appears to have been removed. It was also nice to see the trail has seen some work. The suspension bridge is still nice and bouncy.
After walking the park there was still enough daylight to stop by the Royalton MIll. Years back I had the opportunity to walk through the mill before it deteriorated to the point where it had to be closed. It's sad to see it now because it is long past the point of being stabilized. One day soon a strong storm will take down a wall. It had to be grand in its day.

12 August 2010 After the Rain
We had planned our site's company picnic this afternoon. There's a nice, quiet park in the city which we can have for the afternoon. Unfortunately, the rains arrived at just about the same time as the picnic. There was a brief break of dry in the middle, but once the rains returned, the team settled in for some cornhole under the protection of the shelter.
By the time we gave in to the weather, it was too late to drive back to the office so I decided to head north toward the lake and join Ali and our friend Rich for a few evening caches. On the way, I stopped at a small community park to grab a cache we just never seem to find. It's a nice park and was a good hide. If only I hadn't slipped on the mud on the way to the cache. Two fawns at the park seemed really interested in Geocaching, or maybe they were just looking at me and thinking "salt".
Most of the storms had passed south of the lake so by the time I joined Ali and Rich it was a perfect day to be at the lake. We made a few finds; stopped for ice cream; and made our way home.

8 August 2010 Three States and Home
Before starting our journey home we made our way to the intersection point of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan to find the virtual cache there. The nice granite marker which once marked the triple corner is broken and damaged now, but still marks an interesting location. I'm not sure we've ever found virtuals in three consecutive days before.
On our way to the tri-state benchmark, we saw a sign for indian mounds. Neither of us were aware of any mounds in the area, but have been to a number of mounds in southern Ohio. We were surprised to find four mounds from the Hopewell Indians. We stopped for a visit and a few pictures before continuing our journey.
Our trip home was going to include a stop to get another page of the Ohio Delorme Challenge completed. I had stopped briefly at a Toledo metropark in the spring and was impressed by the quality of the park. Ali decided we would cover a page need with a stop at Secor Park in the Toledo Park system. She picked well. An early cache led us to a small but very well-flowered prairie area. The prairie dock was a real surprise.
Our last stop was at the Irwin Prairie State Nature Preserve to do a very rare earth cache. Lately we've reached the point of avoiding earthcaches, but the write-up of this wet prairie left us interested enough to make the stop and do the earthcache. we were not here at the best time since much of the prairie was dry from our dry summer, but there were nice wildflowers and some interesting birds.

7 August 2010 Geocaching Sends Us to the Poorhouse
...okay not truly, but we did visit one. Poet Will Carleton was inspired to write his moving poem about the plight of a widow who has nowhere turn but the poorhouse as she gets older. Hmmmmm... maybe there's a lesson in there for our modern social security naysayers. The county historical society was hosting a fund raising event on the grounds. We stopped and walked a bit before moving on to a nearby park for some serious caching. The main remaining building is a cobblestone building. This was the first I had seen a cobblestone building outside the Niagara Falls area. The sorting tray for sizing cobblestones was quite interesting.
