12 June 2009 Dolphins

Okay Ali give back the lighthouse!

Uh Oh... We're going to get wet...

We got to see them do lizard push-ups :-)

We had finished all the finds we needed to qualify for the New Jersey County Challenge so we spent the day playing tourists. We started the day at Cape May. I figured we would get to see a great lighthouse, check out some interesting shorebirds, and enjoy the beach. Cape May had all of the above, but then Ali spotted the first dolphin. Soon we saw another and so did the rest of the people on the beach. The school moved the length of the beach to a small rock breakwall then turned and came back. For a while they were within 100 feet of shore. I never expected this. It was awesome! I kept trying to get a good picture, but my brain kept watching these magnificent creatures and forgetting about the camera until it was too late. It probably wasn't smart being in the rip tide, but how many times will I ever get to see a school of dolphins? We were treated to a monstrous storm and then headed to another beach area.

We finally got to Cape May later in the day to see the painted ladies. The Victorians were impressive, but the town was a bit of a let down. After that, we made a late evening stop so I could see Wildwood. Maybe one trip to Wildwood was enough.
