14 January 2024 Feeding the Birds on a Frigid Day

When the days are the coldest, birds can use the extra nutrition from backyard feeding areas. This has been an ongoing activity for us with years of bird sightings as our reward. I wasn't certain about the upside down suet feeder, but the woodpeckers appear to use it.

20 May 2023 Visiting Allegany State Park

We were at Allegany State Park for a large annual geocaching event. It was a very rainy day so we limited our trail time.  Eventually the day brightened.  We celebrated with a visit to Science Lake.  A pair of mergansers were at the water's edge as we passed through.

The woods trail behind science lake also has a number of clintonia.  This year the timing was right for them to be in bloom.

With the days still growing short, it was time for a bit of backyard birding.  A cardinal and downy woodpecker were nearby today.

The parents and poults made a rare pass through the rear of the property this morning.  They were on their way to the woods behind.

Swallowtails are visiting the asters.

It's a real winter this year with cold and normal snowfall. The birds are happy to spend time at our place and enjoy the food offerings.

We can go multiple years without dipping below zero. This will not be one of those years. Warmer days are not in the near forecast.

Luckily the birds have their feathers floofed out.
