This was our third ENWR clean-up. We arrived a little early and walked the trail for a bit while waiting for staff to arrive.
Skunk cabbage was in bloom near a wet area aby the start of the trail.
We offered to cover the same stretch of public road at the border of the refuge as we had covered the prior year. We correctly assumed that there would still be plenty to pick-up after twelve months.
This is the second time there has been a discarded CD in the items discarded. Last year's appeared to be a homemade favorites CD. This year seemed to be a country women's collection.
Our song today was happy as we gathered up trash.
On the way out we spotted turtles sunning on logs.
We stopped at our favorite spot for eagle sightings on the way home. It hasn't been too productive for eagles lately, but we were able to spot sandhill cranes this evening.

25 March 2018 Erie National Wildlife Refuge
Our destination today was Erie National Wildlife Refuge for a clean-up day. We were here for the 2017 spring and happy to return to the site for this spring's clean-up. Last year a significant number of cachers showed up. This year, there were only four of us. Thankfully a couple local scout troops and their families were here to fill the void. Since we were without kids, we were given a state route along a property line.
A section of the area we cleaned was bordered by a one of the refuge's wetland areas.
Lots of colts foot today
We picked about five bags of garbage and a few tires from the side of the road.
These clean-ups are interesting for what shows up on the side of the road. Last year it was a discarded boyfriend cd. This year, Christmas treee ornaments.
The roadside also had things that were supposed to be there like skunk cabbage.
Once we were done with our section of the road and the trash was loaded, we headed off to a section of the refuge with a few geocaches we hadn't found. There was significantly more snow cover on the wooded trail. We missed the first find after searching this snowy bridge.
We were more successful at this old stone bridge. A quick wade in a very cold stream gave us an easy find.

3 September 2016 Surprise Finds in EWNR
Our only geocache find of the day was at the midpoint of a walk in the Erie National Wildlife Refuge. We tried this cache much earlier in the year, but only needed a few feet on the severely iced boardwalk to realize Phineas was too energetic to make the walk without risking serious injury. I had hoped for an earlier return than late summer to see what spring wildflowers might be present, but the finds on our walk made our timing a fortunate event.
I had hoped the conditions were right to see turtlehead, and we did. I was hoping to see nodding lady's tresses, which we didn't, but we were treated to multiple clusters of closed gentian and some lettuce in prime blossom.
The boardwalk ended in a nice view of French Creek.
While we enjoyed the view, Phineas buried his head in the water bowl for a long drink.
We spent the late afternoon walking an old railroad grade through the ANF. The grade used to be a wildflower paradise but recently has struggled with invasives and neglect. For the past two summers the forest service has been working to upgrade the old bed in places where run-off had caused damage and worked to push back the surging multi-flora rose. I was concerned the work might have upset the fragile existence of the turtlehead, great blue lobelia, and sunflowers that used to grow along the trail. Many of the flowers appear to have made it through the work.
We capped our walk with one of the seasons few sightings of square stemmed monkey flower.

22 November 2015 ENWR Part 2
We had just visited the Erie National Wildlife Refuge this month, but knew it was a good choice for a walk on the way back to Ohio. We stopped for a cache at the end of a boardwalk trail. We walked about 60 feet on the snow dusted boardwalk before realizing a mile with an excitable beagle would make this a treacherous journey.
We opted instead for a walk along a trail know as Hank's Road and named for the previous land owner. The trail is one large work zone for the beavers. They have felled many, many trees including some of the largest I have seen dropped by beaver chewing.
These steps were an interesting and effective use of old tires. We ended our journey as an unusual, bright November sunset was closing the day.Friday, March 04, 2016
8 November 2015 Erie National Wildlife Refuge
We expected our late fall walk to be too late for any duck sightings, but one can always hope. The weather was perfect for a walk on the trails. It has been a long time since we last walked these trails with our then dogs Becky, Toli, and Gwen. Near the end of that walk Toli became very sick. Within a few short weeks she was gone, most likely from cancer. It's strange that past memories can haunt a place. Hopefully today helped remove some of that day's memories.
Long shadows on our walk back
