23 July 2017 Monterrey Hike
I would have no idea of where to drive, park, or hike in Monterrey if not for a local colleague who travels the paths often. Eduardo picked me up from the airport, and we headed off to visit a mountain. He drove to the back of a residential area and stopped by a fenced piece of land. After greetings with the owner, we paid a small fee and were off on the trail.
I was happy to find our third cache in Mexico. Most of the Monterrey area listings have been archived. Many of the active remaining caches are missing.
This one was a well done hide.
We were hoping to reach the first high ridge line. While I would like to reach the peak hitting the trail at two after flying here makes those hopes unrealistic. As we climbed higher the trail because a slope of loose rocks.
We got close. In the end increasing shadows and end the hike after sunset meant we were turning around.
Mexican jays were abundant on one stretch of the trail. Local visitors feed them with nuts and oranges. A few even left water bowls with stashes of bottled water to pour out for them.
As a visitor, I would never drive in Monterrey, but the trips to the mountains and back offer great views of life in this large city.
