2 August 2013 Return to the Prairie Cemeteries
Ali was waiting for me at the airport when the red-eye arrived on the morning. We were packed and heading for a couple of days away. Our big stop today was to visit the prairie cemeteries and see the prairie wildflowers. It's an annual visit for us. The day moves around a bit and the flowers in bloom change from year-to-year based on the time, the heat, and the rain of the current season, but there are always flowers in bloom and hopefuly lots of hummingbirds to watch. This year most flowers were in good shape. The monarda was a bit past and the prairie dock hadn't opened yet, but the grey-headed coneflower and royal catchfly were in full bloom. This may have been the best year for watching hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds really gather at royal catchfly.
